Auburn DeKalb Executive Airport Runway 9-27 Extension

Auburn, IN
DeKalb County Airport Authority

Summary:

The existing Runway 9-27 was of insufficient length for jet aircraft operating at the airport. Due to its short length, aircraft could not operate in certain weather conditions and faced restrictions on fuel and/or payload. The DeKalb County Airport Authority extended Runway 9-27 from 5,000 to 7,105 feet, permitting all jet aircraft previously operating at the airport to operate without payload restrictions and use a full fuel load, and enhancing the safety and efficiency of jet operations vital to the region’s businesses and industries.

The project included extending County Road 62, removing County Road 29, and relocating AEP’s high-tension power lines to accommodate the expanded airfield. Crews placed 23,330 tons of asphalt, moved 266,000 cubic yards of earth, and installed 9,400 linear feet of new storm sewer pipe. The FAA-owned instrument landing system was relocated, and new LED runway lights and navigational aids were installed. Adjusting runway approaches at both ends improved safety for airport users and motorists along County Roads 427 and 31.
