Taxiway N and S Extension
and Rehabilitation

Cincinnati Northern Kentucky International Airport
Kenton County Airport Board

Summary:

BF&S was responsible for the Taxiway N and S Extension and Rehabilitation for the Cincinnati Northern Kentucky International Airport. Prior to final recommendations for repair and subsequent design, our team evaluated the pavement condition as well as provided the  mapping and non-destructive deflection testing.  Taxiway N was extended to better accommodate DHL and Amazon Prime Air Cargo Operations.  Existing pavement on Taxiway N and the DHL Apron was rehabilitated to address pavement settlement and to allow for increased B777F and B748F traffic.  Taxiway S was reconstructed to address pavement deterioration.  Reconstruction consisted of a new pavement section and joint layout design based on the current and future fleet mix.  The project also included new water main construction, storm sewers, and new LED airfield lighting.  Project design challenges included a construction safety phasing plan with minimal disruptions to DHL, Amazon Prime Air, and passenger traffic; pavement designs able to withstand increased cargo traffic; and meeting budget targets while still addressing pavement distresses.
